What to Wear for Grad Photos

November 14, 2017 Kristal 0 Comments

We get a lot of questions about what to wear for Grad photos, so we’ve put together this list of suggestions and outfit ideas to get you inspired. Please know that no matter what you choose to wear, you and your academic achievements are what matters. You’ve worked really hard for this moment and you should be proud of it. That’s what Grad photos are intended to capture. Buying an “Artona Dress” might be an option for some, but it’s not a necessity. Your outfit doesn’t have to be trendy or brand new just wear something that reflects who you are.

That being said, since Graduation is such an important milestone, it is a good idea to dress up a bit. It really is up to you how fancy you want to be, but keep in mind that this is a formal occasion.

For your individual session, don't worry about bringing the cap and gown we have you covered. The only thing to keep in mind is the V neckline. Wearing a collared shirt or a high neckline will show when wearing the gown. If you don't want anything to show, you can wear a V neck shirt.

The Casual photos are much more personal. This is where you get to show off your style and any props you might bring along. We’ve put together some common looks to give you some ideas:

Classic Black
Lots of students choose to wear black and for plenty of good reasons. It’s a timeless, classic look that won’t date your photos in the years to come. It also really makes you stand out in the White Room!

Suit Up or Suit Down
Suits are great for formal occasions but that doesn’t mean you have to wear a full three-piece to your Grad photos (but if you do, you’ll be extra sharp). If you don’t have a suit, dress pants and a crisp shirt will do perfectly.

Accessorize
If you want to keep your outfit simple, add a pop of interest with accessories. This could be a statement jewelry piece, a hot pair of shoes, a bright bow tie or maybe a bold mani. But even with these, your best accessories are going to be your smile and confidence.

Don’t Be Afraid to Wear Patterns or Colour
Even though we say dark colours are a good choice, that doesn’t mean you can’t go colourful. If colour is your thing, go for it! Your photos will shine as bright as you are.

Congratulations graduate! Smart looks really good on you — it really doesn’t matter what you wear.

Thankful at Thanksgiving

A Gratitude Guide for Students

Being a student isn’t easy. The workload, the pressure to do well, the need to keep up it’s a lot to manage. There really isn’t much time to pause and reflect on why you’re doing it all in the first place. With pumpkin spice in the air and midterms looming, Thanksgiving is a welcomed break. A chance to reconnect with family and friends and some extra time to catch up on those readings. A moment to catch your breath, if only over the long weekend. It’s also a great time to be thankful for how far you’ve come and for all the stepping stones to your success.

Think about a teacher who really made a difference in your life. Consider the various opportunities that have led you to where you are today. Remember that really awesome grade you got on that project and how good it made you feel. Think about what you’ve learned inside and outside the classroom, and how you can use your knowledge and skills to help others. In addition to celebrating your wins, this is all part of practicing gratitude.

There are a lot of reasons to practice gratitude, including reduced anxiety, improved sleep quality, and overall enjoyment. These are all amazing benefits for your success as a student, as well as for your general wellbeing. It can also help you stay mindful and present in the moment. So this month, we’re inviting you to take a moment and ask yourself these questions:

  1. Who am I thankful for?
  2. What am I proud of?
  3. What have I learned?
  4. How can I help others more?

You may find it useful to write your answers down in a journal, or talk with someone.  If you’re feeling extra thankful for someone in your life, tell them!  And give a heartfelt thanks when you receive a compliment yourself. Remember also to be thankful for yourself — for the time and effort you’re investing in your education, development and future. Thank yourself for fully showing up to your classes and your studies. All the late nights, readings, essays, exams, that’s all you! Practice gratitude as you go, and you’ll be extra thankful when all that hard work pays off.

Benefits of taking on an Internship

July 18, 2017 Artona 0 Comments

Whether you have just graduated and are entering the professional work force or you are student trying to determine the best use of your summer, the thought of an internship may have crossed your mind.

Internships are always a hard decision because it is so easy to feel as though you are being taken advantage of or wasting your time and that can leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Internships are great for many reasons and are often a much better choice than taking an irrelevant, poorly paying job if you are a new grad.

They help you build experience
This is a given, this is why we all consider taking an internship. It is a great way to build experience in an industry and gain some credibility so that you can have something to put on your resume when you are applying for jobs.

Make connections
Although experience is important that’s not all that internships are about. Internships are an opportunity to build a personal network. If you choose to take on an internship we’re not saying you shouldn’t focus on learning and putting your skills to use but remember to take advantage of this opportunity. Attend company social events, talk to your co-workers, learn about their journeys and their career paths. Not only will you get some great advice but you will create a solid connection that you will always have. These connections are going to help you in your future, especially if you need a reference or if you want to pursue a job at a company one of your coworkers has a great relationship with.

Get your foot in the door
If you are absolutely in love with an organization and you’re not qualified to work for them, an internship is a great way to get your foot in the door. It gives you the opportunity to show the organization what your capable of, as if you were doing one very long interview. If you demonstrate your knowledge, capabilities and that you are a good fit for the team, chances are they are going to think of you if an opportunity becomes available. At the end of an interview you should express if you are interested in a career with the organization, it shows initiative and this might lead the organization to make a position for you to keep you on the team or offer you a different position within the company.

Test the waters
An internship is also a great way to test out different industries and career paths to see if they are a good fit for you, without having to commit long term.

If you are a new grad and you’re thinking “hey- I need to be able to pay the bills” consider a part time internship while working part time or seek out a paid internship. Paid internships are usually minimum wage or paid by lump sum but this is better than no pay at all if you are concerned about making ends meet or having spending money for your summer.

If you are having trouble finding an internship that fits what you are looking for, reach out to organizations that you are interested in and offer the idea to them along with your application for consideration.

Each school year Artona partners with many high schools and provides Co-op mentorship in many departments. Students that are interested in Accounting/Finance, Photography, Digital Imaging and graphics spend days at Artona for work experience side by side our staff. We usually have a new face in the studio every other week through the whole year working with approximately 35 students a year. Find out more on our community page.

If you are interested in this opportunity, talk to your school counsellor or contact us directly at social@artona.com, (604) 872-7272 or @artona on Twitter and @ArtonaGroup on Facebook with any questions.
